Should German become the sole official language of the EU?

English is already used as a common tongue of communication , altough it is not official. I think it will continue this way and that there will never be an officialization of english or other languages as a common one for the EU. the small states will never give up theirs, and they have good reasons to do so. The motto of europe is unity in diversity. What is the purpose to create a giant monster state with a melted culture that would belong to none finally?

Western countries:

That map was made by idiots. How come Macedonia isn't western while Greece is? Or Croatia - western, Serbia what? Asiatic?

More hilarious:

"Original description: Classical definition of the Western world: All of the depicted countries in blue were predominately influenced by Greek, Roman and Christian influences and/or shaped by strong Western European immigration and settlement." LOL

So the Balkans, Russia etc weren't predominately influenced by Greek, Roman and Christian influences?

Maybe is just a map of Western Christianity. But even so it fails again as Greece is Eastern.

If "Strong Western Immigration" means Gemanic immigration during migration period and in 13th century, the statement is correct.

There are too many people who would be against a single language. I would be ready to join the insurgency if there were one official language.

People (monkeys) do anything (any dance) for money.

it should be Russian. Even Greeks sing in Russian, and it's not bad at all!

So giving money to the states opposing the new only official language would calm them down. As always, it all ends up being a question of money.

Which state has so much money to waste for such unsensed cause?

Greek, Roman and Christian influences were important, but the most important influence on Europe and Western culture came from people, not from ideas.

Maybe the author of the map has thought that those countries have
western cultures that belong to the western branch of Christendom (Baltic countries, Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia) or lay on the western side of the iron curtain after WW II (Greece).

Perhaps he's watched too much Rock IV or other Cold War propaganda.

Russia does not have Roman influence.

I think it's daft having all these different languages being recognised by the EU. The cost of translation must be huge. Even Irish is an official EU tongue, yet every single Irish speaker can also understand English.

I would pick half a dozen major languages and publish documents only in them. For example, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Maybe Polish as well, to represent the Slavic side of Europe.
