1. English, obviously

2. Spanish, due to the United States (where it is by far the most studied), Brazil (where it is compulsory by law at schools) and countries of the European Union (like Germany, France or UK).

The success of this language is due to the strong presence of the language in 3 Continents (North America, European Union and South America) and other places (North Africa, Equatorial Guinea, etc...)

3. French. There is a slight decline of the language worldwide, due to several factors. The globalization is not good for French language. The role of "second global language" was not very succesful. People in all the world prefer to study English and not French.

4. German. There is at this moment a slight decline of the study of this language in several countries, like in USA.

5. Chinese. Chinese is now 5th. It can threaten the place of German soon if the tendency is the same in the next years.

6. Italian. It was 5th until the boom of the Chinese studies worldwide. Anyway it is a good place for the language of 60 million of Italians.

PD. There is only one doubt. The study of Arabic is very difficult to know. Several millions of muslims around the World have a religious knowledge of Arabic but sometimes not a medium level of grammar or not religious vocabulary. So, we don't know how many people speak Arabic in muslim countries. In my opinion, it can be more studied than Italian.

But don't worry man, media are standardized languages.

1) Global english (USA english 'cause medias).
2) Romance languages (Blanc will kill me if i write only spanish, he he he)
3) Chinese (which one? there are several and less closed than spanish to portuguese, italian or even french)

Globalization is here now.

1. English, obviously

2. French, due to the United States (where it is by far the 2nd most studied), Brazil (where it is compulsory by law at schools) and countries of the European Union (like Germany, Spain or UK).

The success of this language is due to the strong presence of the language in 5 Continents (North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America) and other places. Plus, beauty, elegance, clarity, and huge number of ideas contributed by its speaker to human society like in science, technology, arts, literature, medicine, etc..

3. Russian. It suffered a sharp decline after the collapse of Soviet Union but recovered. Spoken natively in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan and as secondary language in other ex-Soviet states. The first foreign language learned in Mongolia and widely spoken in Hispanic countries of Cuba and Gibraltar. Russian is also prominent in science and medicine and US astronauts are required to be at least proficient in it.

4. German. Spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg. It competes neck to neck with English and Russian in Eastern Europe.

5. Italian. Despite the fact that Italian is official only in Italy, San Marino, and Switzerland, it is spoken by 15 million people as an immigrant language in the US, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Venezuela, etc. Italian is also the most common foreign language in Albania and after English in Malta. It is popular in Slovenia and Croatia and beginning to catch up with German in Slovakia and Hungary. Italian has exerted much influence in arts and literature.

6. Spanish. Its chances to become a world language is stagnant over the last century despite the large number of native speakers. The news that large number of people are taking it in High School like in the US is an irony. All of those who took it could not even speak a simple Spanish sentence after graduation. Spanish is just a stepping stone for them. Only the Hispanics themselves use this language among themselves.

7. Chinese. Chinese is now popular. But just like Spanish, few non-Chinese speak it but it has the largest native speakers of all languages.

8. Arabic. The native language of the Arabs and the religious language for Muslims all over the world. Arabic is catching up with other languages in popularity.
