Don't you know what "across the street" means? Let's say you're walking down the sidewalk along a street, and then you step into the street and cross it to the sidewalk on the other side. You are now across the street from your original position.

So, the sentence means that you have a house on one side of a street and on the other side of the street, directly opposite your house, there is another house, in which a boy who is from Canada lives.

This could be rephrased as follows:
A boy from Canada lives across the street from us.

To be even more explicit.
We live on Maple street. A boy who is from Canada also lives on Maple street. The boy from Canada lives on one side of Maple street and we live on the other side of Maple street.

Hope this helps.
