Was the famous Cleopatra´s mother tongue Greek or Egyptian?
Guest   Tue Apr 01, 2008 1:17 pm GMT
Greek.
Egyptian culture was dying at that time, the country's elites had been hellenized for generations.
And she also spoke Greek with her Roman lovers.

Who? What lovers? Don't make me come over!

Probably she spoke Latin and Coptic as well.

Cleopatra´s family, the Ptolemaic dynasty, was in Egypt since 300 years and was nevertheless Hellenistic-Greek and not Egyptian.

The Bourbon dinasty reigns in Spain since 300 years ago and they speak Spanish ,not French. Many sources state that Greek was Cleopatra's first language, and notations in greek have been found by her hand on the bottom of several documents . Some sources say that she also spoke Aramaic , Ethiopic, and Hebrew . Other sources indicate that she spoke Syrian and Troglodyte .

The Franks in Neustria reigned since Chlodewech for 400 years over what is today North-Western France without speaking Latin or Romance. The Neustian kings and nobles constantly married Germanic princesses and noblewomen to keep their roots in the barbarian forests... pretty much the same was done by the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt in order to keep their Macedonian roots.

Has any Greek influence been preserved in Egyptian language?
Guest   Tue Apr 01, 2008 7:16 pm GMT
Cleopatra spoke the language of sex.
She was mute.

The body language of Cleopatra probably was very sensual.

Old Egyptian or Coptic surely had lots of Greek in it, but modern Arabic-Egyptian has probably kept no relation.

<< Has any Greek influence been preserved in Egyptian language? >>
-- Ancient Egyptian has been substituted by Arabic long time ago but survives as liturgigal language of the Egytian Coptic Christian Church, which uses an slightly modified Greek alphabet.

<< The Franks in Neustria reigned since Chlodewech for 400 years over what is today North-Western France without speaking Latin or Romance >>
-- Ignorance at its best.
