I can`t understand a sentence from a book

I can`t translate this sentence "I put my head around the door".
I understand each world separately but all sense of this sentence is quite strange and something new for me. If there were for example "that" it would help me but without that i have the problem.

It probably means that someone is peeking from behind a door and only sticking their head out.

That's exactly what it means.
