Why the fuck do Brits call their mothers "mum"? Do they mummify their mothers? This word really makes me cringe.

Where are you from? In New England we call our mothers "mum" too, but we spell it "mom". We also say "mama" pronounced "mummah"

As long as you spell it "mom", you're fine by me.

'Mum' is universal in NZ and Aussie. In fact, people are ridiculed for saying 'mom'.

Wow. I'm never going there. It sounds gross.

"mama" pronounced "mummah"?
CRINGE.
New England accents are intolerable at times...

The most cringe worthy of all however is 'MA'!!!!!

AGREED.

I'm a Briton and call my mother mam.

Mum, mom, mam and ma are all used in Briton, not just mum.

I know in the UK "mum" is the normal word to say "mom". I've always wondered if they also commonly say "mummy", because that would be funny.
PS: LOL, it seems they do. My dictionary says it is the British word for "mommy".

Yep, my (26year old) girlfriend still calls her mother "mummy"

I say mawm, spell it mom though.

As long as you say it with love, it doesn't really matter how you pronounce it!!!

Quisdane- I must be your nemesis! I was born in Boston and raised in Providence! :-) Where are you from?
