how do you know when 'ch' is 'k'?

Is there a rule to know when 'ch'is pronounced 'k'?

Well if it's in a Greek-derived word (like "chrome", "Christ", "psyche", "pachyderm"), it's probably pronounced [k].

It usually depends on the language it came from... It's /S/ in words of French origin (for the most part).
