Omission of "did"
Has anyone noticed that people often omit the the word "did" in questions in the past tense?
For instance: "You find anything?" instead of "Did you find anything?"
A lot of times they are swallowing the "did" part and combining it with the next word. It sounds like
"dyou find anything?" It's almost impossible to hear
I can omit both the "did" and the you", so that's it's just "find anything?" "you find anything?" omitting just "did" doesn't sound like something I'd say. However "did you" is normally pronounced like "didjoo" or "didja" when it's actually used in the sentence.
Isn't "Did you find anything?" more often pronounced like
"d'ja find anything?" ("find" is stressed) at least in US English, or at least around here?
I think people would rather say "You found something?" and not "You find
anything?" when referring to the past. I doubt complete omission of _did_ in questions is possible.
<<I think people would rather say "You found something?" and not "You find
anything?" when referring to the past. I doubt complete omission of _did_ in questions is possible.>> What do you base your doubt on? People where I live do say this, so you're wrong. |
