Is alot used a lot?

In recent times I've noticed students often writing "a lot" as "alot". Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be regarded as an acceptable spelling alternative?

I'm not really familiar with that - I always write it as "a lot". I have noticed that "alright" is used quite a bit.
