Could somebody say something about this? By evidence, I believe this is how the English language sounds. This is probably what a non-speaker of English hears when somebody speaks English.

It doesn't look "made-up", it looks like real technical language that's been tweaked to conceal its true origin.

There must not have been many in this part. Also, I probably left some out because this can only be done with some words. I had to skip 25-30% of it. Not to presume, but I wouldn't think leaving those words out would really change the sound of the language, but that may not be the case.

Well, when I was a small child I lived in Holland (the Hague) for a few years, because my dad was posted there with work. My mum has a central lowlands scottish accent (Falkirk/Stirling accent) and she put some effort into learning Dutch.

When she spoke to the Dutch in their language, occasionally they would be confused by her accent, and said that she sounded Frisian. Because her father still spoke some of the Broad Scots dialect to her sometimes, she said it sounded very close to Frisian and she could understand a lot of Frisian because of that knowledge (plus her Dutch, of course).

Much more often Dutch people would say to her, with characteristic forwardness, "I think it's better we speak in English", and mostly of course they were right since Dutch people (in the Hague at least) are generally excellent English speakers. Which didn't help her Dutch learning much.

I'm guessing Frisian is the closest remaining language to the Anglo-Saxon dialects of the Dark Ages. I'm sure there's plenty of people who have studied Old English and can compare it to Frisian. I wonder if it sounds like English as much as Broad Scots?

I personally don't remember any real amount of Dutch, despite being sent to a Dutch Kindergarten for 2 years, but I'd never confuse it with German; it has a totally different rhythm. It really doesn't sound much like English either, to me.

A final question - did the Anglo-Saxons displace rather than integrate with the resident Roman Celts in England? It might make a difference to how the "invading" Germanic language was pronounced, if it was picked up by the Celts.

If you are one of those people who gets annoyed when people start speaking to you in English when you're trying to learn their language, just kill them. That will teach them not to start speaking English.

The Anglo-Saxons did not integrate with the native Celts. They displaced them. This is why English has so few words of Celtic origin from this period, and explains why there are few to no Celtic placenames in England.

How "Roman" the Celts were is also debatable. Britain was never fully Romanized, but was merely a Roman outpost where Roman legions picked up cheap Celtic slave labour :\

There are evidences that the Anglo-Saxons did not displace the Roman Celts in England. It can be compared with the Spanish 'invasion' in Central/South America. That is to say, people in Mexico are not pure descendants of the Spaniards, in the same way it would be wrong to say the English are pure descendants of the Anglo-Saxons. Most Saxons stayed in their homeland, Northern Germany. The Germanic people in Britain (i.e. the land of the Britons - a Celtic people) rather made up the ruling class and imposed their language on the natives, though there had been plenty meaning shifts of English words.
