Get myself confused by English grammar

I just don't get it to be honest. I find it unbelievably difficult. I used to find French at school difficult, partly because the French teacher used to have Monday morning spelling tests. You could say French ruined my life because my grades in the first year of Grammar School then determined which Form I would be in, etc etc.
But French is so easy compared to Polish.
Potatoe - sorry 'Potato' - pomme de terre - ziemniak
Spanish - patata : Portugese - batata : German - Kartoffel (difficult - a bit like trufel) : Scottish - tattie
Where does Polish come from? What planet!
Potato
potato
Noun (Rzeczownik) ziemniak;
potato beetle-stonka ziemniaczana
Another example from livemocha
The French for 'thin' is 'mince'. That makes sense:
Julian Clary - Mincing Machine

"mincing walk" etc
