Are some folk in this forum using the word 'particle', when they mean 'participle'? Is 'particle' gaining acceptance as an alternative to 'participle'.

Not as far as I know.
I use "particle" as a general-purpose term to describe a word or word part used as some sort of grammatical marker - like "not" or "to" in "to eat".
