How to distinguish 'work' and 'walk'
Yes, I know, 'work' can be pronounced 'wəːrk'
But in British English, it is pronounced 'w3ːk'
And 'walk' is pronounced 'wɔːk'
So My question is -
How to distinguish
ɔ and 3 sound
(and also ɔ and o sound)
Waiting for your Reply :-
I cannot see the ɔ and ɔ bookstaffs in your post--they appear to me as squares. However, In Standard British English the two words are not pronounced the same, though they are a little similar.
work = (approx) /wU: 3k/
walk = (approx) /wO:k/
Even as an American, these British sounds are easy for me to distinguish and pronounce. What is your problem?
Indeed, they're very different, so what's your problem with them ?
A consultant is doing the rounds at a hospital in Newcastle. He gets to a bed abnd looks at the chart. "Mr Smith, your leg appears to be on the mend. If we get you out of bed today do you think you could start trying to walk?". "[wO:k]???", says the patient, "[wEi man a "kan@t "i:v@n wa:k]!"
