Is "lama" perhaps derived from the Dalai Lama?

I think "llama" refers to the animal.

A grand high llama would be someone brilliant or philosophical. It does refer to the Dalai Lama. I don't know whether Garfield is being sarcastic or not.

"Grand High Llama" is the title bestowed upon the high priest/sage/prophet of the Invisible Pink Unicorn (IPU). Garfield was definitely being sarcastic.
