I was just watching "The Lord of the Rings" and I remember reading that the hobbits from the Shire were supposed to have West Country accents (with the clear exceptions of posh Frodo and Scottish Pippin). Is the film any good in this respect? The accent they use is rhotic, but surely this is not the only characteristic of West Country English. Can anyone more familiar with the accent comment on this?
Somerset English.

I think the film follows this with Frodo's friend Sam. The accent is based upon Gloustershire as it was believed it sounded less american than Cornwall (Obviously as the actor is American this ,may have caused problems). The example of a difference given was "better" (Gloustershire) rather than "bedder" (Cornwall)- both are SW English.
(Above) Sorry Gloustershire=Gloucestershire........I'm very, very drunk!!
