"paid" and "laid"

Why are they spelled that way rather than "payed" and "layed"?

Maybe it's the same reason that a similar thing happens in French.

Payer - je paie, tu paies etc

You paid to get laid? Hope the whore was of acceptable quality.

in Bangkok? The whores come no finer, I assure you.
