A mistake in an Antimoon article
http://www.antimoon.com/how/lovelearn.htm
In this article -Improving your motivation for learning English- it writes
"If you do these things, you will not only have fun and learn English"
I know my English is nothing compared to Tom's and all but shouldn't it be
"If you do these things, you will not only have fun but also you will learn English" ?
I would use the word order "but you will also," but yeah, that's a mistake. Good spot. :)
Also should be a comma between "fun" and "but". And the second "you will" can be dropped.
Another Guest, you're obsessed with commas. You compulsively spot missing commas in anything you read. I was wondering, where can I find a list of "anotherguestesque" pointers on how commas should be used?
Another Guest, you're half right. If tesla's wording is used, a comma is needed to separate clauses. However, if "you will" is dropped, the comma is no longer needed.
Howard, in case you weren't being facetious, there's a nice list of comma guidelines here:
http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/commas.asp
(See especially rules 12 and 15.)
Is the Antimoon article really "wrong", or is it a bit unusual or atypical?
Perhaps the most common way of saying this (on this side of the pond would be):
"If you do these things, not only will you have fun, but you'll learn English, too."
AnotherGuest, I've noticed your love of commas in other threads, too. From this, I deduce that you're an American.
"If you do these things, you will not only have fun but also you will learn English" ?
-----------------------------------------------
On my side of the pond, it's common to say:
Do these, have fun and learn English!
I must have added the link for a reason right? Why don't you check yourself?
<<For example:
"If you do these things, you will not only have fun and learn English," [but you will also become a better writer.] >>
I guess we can conclude that it was just a typo in the original text, where the final clause was left out.
If it is the end of the sentence, then it is incorrect because it is not a complete thought.
Jasper Why don't you come and suck my comma..?.. you know you want to punk..!!
Did you mean:
"...you know you want to, punk...!!"?
