Portuguese X Italian,mutual intelligibility,difficulty!

Portuguese and italian are romance languages that share a lot in commom.

We always see here in this forum spanish being compared to italian,portuguese and french.
Portuguese always to spanish and french sometimes.
Italian to french and spanish.

Spaniards can understand portuguese and take the "gist" of italian(for what ive seen).
Italians can take the gist of spanish speech.
Lusophones can hear spaniards a bit better.
Portugueses can hear italians or vice-versa?Why they can understant it worst than spaniards?
Whats the portuguese-italian lexical similarity.

Spanish seems to be the less complex romantic language and french the opposite,almost hands down around here.
What about italian x portuguese? From a neutral point of view:japanese eg.

Spanish-speaking and Italian-speaking people can understand each other with a symmetrical degree of difficulty. That's not the case with Portuguese, where speakers can understand Spanish and Italian more easily than the reverse, although the former is easier for Portuguese-speakers to understand than the latter.

Less complex is a loaded and ambiguous term. The grammar of all major Romance languages is similar in term of verb conjugation, word-order etc, with vernacular Brazilian Portuguese being somewhat divergent (and arguably "simpler") than the European or formal version. I'm not a neutral POV, though, being a Brazilian who also knows Spanish and a bit of Italian.
