I grew up in a small Georgia town in the Southeastern US. The wh words were pronounced with the hw sound. I never dreamed (up until last year) that most people pronounced wine/whine, whales/Wales or witch/which the same. When I pronounce these words, they are nothing alike! I am a teacher (in a small city), and my students do get a kick out of hearing me say these words, but I wouldn't change my "accent" for anything. I'm very proud of my small town upbringing and my quirky pronunciation which reflects my Celtic heritage from generations back!

"WH" is not pronounced "HW" when it's not a plain "W". That's just a load of rubbish written by careless listeners and non practitioners.
I say "what", then I say "h-wot" and "wot" and all three are different. I've got a Scottish accent.
Listen to someone say it. The whole sound is aspirated, the lips don't fully close on the W.

Folk in England have been saying 'hwu' for hundreds and hundreds of more years than they have not.
