Which do you think is better overall, all things considered?
French vs Italian cinema
Spain has better cinema: Buñuel or Berlanga ar unparalleled by French or Italian filmmakers.
The only Spanish film known outside Spain is Pan's Labyrinth, which actually had a Mexican director. French cinema absolutely trounces Spanish cinema.
French movies are unknown outside of France. When was last time a French filmmaker won an Oscar?
Everyone knows "Amélie" and the Taxi films yet no one could name a single Spanish film. That is the reality.

EVERYONE who is ANYONE knows Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut.
I watched their films in an AMERICAN school; they were incorporated into the English lesson. No other director who was not American or British ever made it into the classroom.
In New York, tickets for the French Cinema Rendez-Vous are sold out weeks in advance. Italian movies never cause such a commotion (not to mention Spanish!).

What about the Walloon Dardenne Brothers. They're also of significance. One of the few people making me call myself a Belgian.
The best director of all time, Ingmar Bergman, was Swedish. Truly a country of great people!
Paul Verhoven gave the Dutch great hopes, but Dutch cinema has collapsed ever since.
