Austria and Germany are very different countries with different histories, Austria has been shaped by the Austro-Hungarian empire, while Germany had its own empires of various sorts.
The US and Britain are very different places too, the two countries have completely different outlooks and attitudes, very few British people could move to America and immediately feel at home and vice versa.
People over-play language similarities, despite America speaking the same language, as a British person I feel more at home in Northern France than I do the US. This opinion is out of absolutely no ill will to Americans, simply I find the culture and attitude of Northern France to be far more like Britain than the US is.
