Northern Cities Vowel Shift
I'm trying to learn to speak like I have the Northern Cities Vowel Shift. Is it just a matter of pronouncing the vowels as below, or is there more to it than that?
ket cut
cut cot
caught cot
cot cot
cat kee-at
Does the Northern Cities Vowel shift really have a cot-caught-cut merger? I don't think so.
<<Does the Northern Cities Vowel shift really have a cot-caught-cut merger?>>
No. In NCVS speech, "caught" would be [kAt] and "cot" would be [kat].
and coffee would be [kAfi]
coffee [kAfi] is Californian English as well :)

What about ''cut'', does it merge with ''cot'' or ''caught'' in the Northern Cities Shift? Guest is suggesting the all three of ''cot'', ''caught'' and ''cut'' merge in the Northern Cities Shift.
All three of ''cot'', ''caught'' and ''cut'' are distinct in the Northern Cities Shift.
cut - /kVt/ shifted to /kOt/
caught - /kOt/ shifted to /kAt/
cot - /kAt/ shifted to /kat/
