I think this depends on what happens to /i/ (the "ee" sound) before /l/.
For me, /i/ is [i:] before an /l/ which is followed by a vowel, but [i@] before one which is followed by a consonant or at the end of a word. So "appeal" is [@pi@5], but "appealing" is [@pi:lIN(g)]. Other accents may differ. ([@]=schwa, [5]=dark L, [N(g)] means I sometimes pronounce the [g] and sometimes don't.) |
