Ancient and modern Greek

The pronunciation, esp of long vowels, is different...
otherwise, they are pretty close (?)
It depends on the form of Greek your talking about. Before the 70's, the written standard of Greek was an artificial form much closer to Classical Greek than the modern one is, so older and better-educated Greeks would be able to read Classical Greek more easily than younger ones. They are fairly similar though. A Modern Greek speaker could probably understand ~75% of a Classical text, though some vocabulary and especially grammar would be difficult. I suppose it's easier than English speakers reading Chaucer. (I don't actually speak Greek, but I took some classes a few years ago.)
