Countries in the UK
There are two obvious solutions to all that stated above:
1. Lobby the government at Westminster to introduce all of those things currently available in Scotland in England as well.
2. Vote for parties which support introducing the above.
I'm afraid I'm not going to participate in any lobbying of Westminster for that though, because I'll be getting all of those things as of 22nd September anyway, and I'm going to be too busy over the next few months.
Damian, have you been coming down to England to palm off your Monopoly money again?. Tut tut.
Who care about UK? it's worth nothing
Ain't worth nothing but a peanut... light weight, baby!
***Damian, have you been coming down to England to palm off your Monopoly money again?. Tut tut***
Tut tut indeed! - you English muppets just won't accept it in the stores or wherever down there! The only place in England where my Scottish banknotes where accepted without any problems was when I was in Newcastle. Three cheers for the Geordies! Some of them may piss in the street when blootered but they are ace! We love the Geordies up here!
Damian, two questions:
1. Are Northern Irish banknotes generally accepted in Scotland?
2. If I get money out of, say, a *Bank of Scotland* cashpoint in Scotland, would I get only Bank of Scotland banknotes, or could I get a mixture of Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale, and even Bank of England banknotes?
Thanks! :)

Urgh! You like horrible, smelly Geordies?! Surely you meant to say Mackems? Like Geordies, but better looking and more intelligent ;-)
<<Nothing irritates more than the fact that Scots have many cancer drugs that are denied to the English, have free dental care whereas the English have to pay, and don't have to pay to go to university whereas the English have tuition fees (thanks to SCOTTISH politicians who voted at Westminster FOR England to have them even though the Scottish parliament voted AGAINST Scotland to have them and not allowing English MPs to have a say). Life-prolonging implants for brain tumours and a series of drugs for Alzheimer's patients are also available North of the border but not in England. Nothing irritates me more than the fact that only those pensioners in England on means-tested pensions credit are availabe for grants to heat their homes, whereas pensioners in Scotland get FREE central heating installation, available to ALL. Nothing irritates me more than the fact that everyone has to pay for public transport in England, even pensioners and the very young, except for local off-peak journeys, whereas EVERYONE in Scotland over the age of 60 has free bus and coach travel. In Scotland, those aged between 16 and 18 again one-third off bus and train travel, as well as a FREE £20 rail card. Nothing irritates more than in England eye-tests cost £18.95 and dental check-ups cost £15.90. In Scotland, they get all these tings for FREE (in line with the rest of Europe).
And all of these goodies that the Scots receive but are denied to the English (and Welsh) are paid for by......the English (and Welsh) taxpayer.
So you can excuse the English and Welsh for not accepting Scotland's differently-designed banknotes>>>
I have to say I actually agree with this bloke for once. Without question the West Lothian Question needs to be addressed, how it can be right for Scottish MP's to vote on matters affecting England but the English cannot vote on matters affecting Scotland??? Why should the Scots have as much say and in some cases 'more' say in local matters than the locals!! And this political anomaly is used all the time. Labour frequently rely on votes from Scottish MP's to push through disputable legislation that affects us poor gits here in England (such as tuition fees).
I shudder to think of how many people have suffered in this country (especially the OAP’s) as a result of the uneven and unfair system here.
My uncle suffers from Wet AMD which is one of the (if not THE) leading cause of blindness in Britain. If he lived in Scotland he would be already getting treatment for this condition via Lucentis or Macugen injections (two of the beat if not THE best treatments for this condition) 'free' of charge. Seeing as he lives in England he will have to basically beg to get access to these drugs otherwise he will be paying thousands of £££££ as many others are having to. And all the while he gets blinder - cheers!!!
I will also be paying £3,000 per annum from September for my education while my cousin in Scotland apparently pays nought - cheers!!
The answer to this question? Devolution, something I have been opposed to but am increasingly warming too. The funny thing is, ‘apparently’ this can only come about if the Scottish vote for it (which of course they will not), it seems that us English will not even have a say in that!!!
<<I'm afraid I'm not going to participate in any lobbying of Westminster for that though, because I'll be getting all of those things as of 22nd September anyway, and I'm going to be too busy over the next few months. >>
I am glad you will be reaping the benefits of all this unfairness Benjamin while many suffer as a result of it down here. Your attitude stinks and is typical of what is wrong with the attitude of so many today. 'Yeah I can see there is injustice and suffering in the world, but it does not affect me so I couldn’t give a stuff'' - nice one mate and good for you. I hope you enjoy Scotland, please don't come back.
With regards to the banknotes, I have gone to Scotland many times and am always given Scottish notes as change. On one occassion I explained to one of the till attendents that I am going back to England and that it is a pain in the arse getting anyone to accept Scottish notes, so could they give me the change in 'English' pounds sterling. The lad laughed and said "we know, thats why we give you Scottish notes" and promptly gave me a handful of Scottish tender. I have to admit, that was funny.
Considering all the injustice and suffering in the world, I think that the injustice and suffering resulting from the West Lothian Question is extremely minor. And it's a question that could easily be resolved with a bit of lobbying and protest — something which I haven't seen to any serious capacity yet. It could also be resolved by voting for a party which supports 'English votes on English laws', such as the Conservative Party. (Not that I'd ever advocate voting Conservative, but the option is certainly there).
I totally agree that the West Lothian Question is a problem that needs to be resolved. However, I see it as the responsibility of *England* to sort it out, because there's nothing that the Scottish Executive and the Scottish Parliament can do about it. I don't understand why some English people seem to turn their frustration over this into a rant against Scotland.
I think it's time that many more English people started realising that Scotland is a different country — it's not Scotland's fault that your uncle cannot receive those drugs free of charge in England. There are many services available in, say, Denmark which are not available in England, yet no-one seems to complain about this or claim that it's 'unfair'.
Heck, you could even hold a fully-fledged independence referendum in England if you wanted — a 'yes' vote in that would certainly resolve the West Lothian Question.
I think you may be living on another planet, because to compare grievances the English have with ‘British’ politics and somehow link these with Denmark is an absolutely ridiculous comment to make. It makes me think that somehow you are unaware of the intrinsic link between the nations politically (among other things) or the affect of Scottish politicians in England (and Wales). If you did then you would know why many English are getting a tad pissed off.
You said it’s not Scotland's fault that many things are not available here. Hmmmnnn this is a bit of a silly thing to say. The Scottish have a say in legislations passed in England but the English have no reciprocal vote. Much legislation that are opposed to by Scottish MP's - are invariably passed in England - by Scottish MP's no less!!!!!
The tuition fees is a perfect example, Scottish MP's had a huge say if not the 'main' say in whether tuition fees were to be implemented here and invariably voted yes. Yet these Scottish MP's also voted that the Scottish students do not have to pay - why's that mate???? Am I meant to blame the Danish for me having to pay £3,000 a year while the Scots don't have too, even though I know for a fact that Scottish MP’s are directly responsible???
Many medical treatments are paid for overwhelmingly by the ENGLISH taxpayer. So if we are paying for treatments that others can have but we can't, is it really that surprising that those same people get a little peed off??? I don't see my money being spent by the Danish do you????
I also know of many medical treatments available in Scotland that are not available in England due solely to the votes of Scottish MP's (bear with me I will see if I can find some specific examples for you). I don't see Danish MP's vetoing the opportunity for vital healthcare being accessed by the English (and I believe the Welsh also), but I do see Scottish MP’s doing so!!!
I also see Scottish MP’S imposing increased tax burdens on the English that those in their own constituents don’t have to pay – further adding to the sense of frustration here (I don’t see Danish MP’s doing this, do you??). Remember, Scotland has smaller constituencies than here in England, and therefore a disproportionate influence. Is it unreasonable that we should have the hump when we see a disproportionate amount of public spending (disproportionately paid for by the English taxpayer) spent in Scotland when compared to that in England???
Is it really an out of order request to ask that British (‘not’ Danish) funds should be shared equally among its people (that means British people not Danish people by the way).
I see many issues that Scottish MP's have influenced in this country, so how you can turn around and say Scotland is as culpable as Denmark for many of these issues is, for me, quite frankly unbelievable mate.
You say vote for Conservatives or whatever, so by that arguement we should base our vote on one issue??? I am sorry I am not going to vote for a party that appeases one view of mine but is in disagreement with a million others. I am certain the Conservatives were in power for quite some time not too long ago and failed to address the issue anyway.
You say people power is key, to a certain extent you have a point, but as previously mentioned many people sadly subscribe to an out of sight out of mind way of thinking (which, judging by previous comments includes you). Quite simply, in my opinion the general English public are oblivious to how un-even handed British politics is (note I said British politics NOT Danish) and how much it affects them.
Besides, this can be applied to a many other issues such as immigration, housing, benefits, the EU etc. If we all lobbied together on issues we were annoyed about where would it end?? This is one issue that annoys me, but there are a million others - should I lobby the government on all of those??? Do you lobby the government on things that piss you off??? No I did not think so. Still, it does not make 'those' things right does it. And it does not mean we can't have or voice an opinion.
<<Considering all the injustice and suffering in the world, I think that the injustice and suffering resulting from the West Lothian Question is extremely minor.>>
You took me too literally on that point by the way.
I also must add, that I am not against the Scots in anyway, but these things are not right - end off. I have a great fondness for Scotland and its people. I am proud of the union but am starting to question (like the Scots) its viability now. Many see this ‘Britishness’ rubbish from Gordon Brown as a way of keeping the union going, he knows what Scotland will lose if the ties are severed (I for one hope that Scotland would prosper, but I think they will be in a spot of bother). If the SNP do hold a referendum, I think the Scots, despite what they say, will not go for independence, because they know more than most what they will lose.
The reference to Denmark was a response to how some English people, jealous of the services available in Scotland which aren't available in England, seem to wish to see those services abolished on Scotland, rather than campaign for them to be introduced in England as well. However, such people never seem to make similar comments about other countries, such as Denmark.
Education and healthcare are not reserved matters. This means that the Scottish Parliament can legislate on them as it sees fit, regardless of what legislation is being passed at Westminster for England — essentially in the same way that the Finish government can pass legislation on these issues without too much concern for what's going on in Portugal.
I agree that the present situation is unfair and thus needs to be resolved. However, it needs to be resolved by legislation passed at Westminster, where the vast majority of MPs are English. You will notice that English MPs at Westminster have thus far not voted to bar Scottish MPs from voting on specifically English issues — partly because Labour have vested political interests in maintaining the status quo, I'd imagine. But it is their (and by extension your) responsibility to resolve the issue. The Scottish Executive and the Scottish Parliament are not in a position to legislate on this, sorry. By the way, SNP and Scottish Conservative MPs at Westminster do not vote on issues which only affect England.
I am not really advocating that you vote Conservative. I'm a Green voter myself. I'm just pointing out that there are parties which support what you want to achieve, so it's not as though you have absolutely no choice on the matter. For the record, the Greens would ultimately support dissolution of the United Kingdom due to their commitment to the decentralisation of power.
Benjamin:
Good evening.
In answer to your Qs:
1 Northern Irish banknotes: AFAIK they are accepted here but not too sure about generally. I would imagine they turn up in places like Glasgow more than any other. To be honest, I've never seen them myself - not that I can remember. Legally I'm pretty sure that all retail outlets are obliged to accept them, much as all those down in England should accept ours - but practice is so often different from theory in so many quarters so what the hell.
2 As for Scottish ATMs - the ones I use here in Edinburgh (almost always Royal Bank of Scotland, my own bank) mostly dispense RBS notes, but sometimes the others pop out - mostly Bank of Scotland. Both banks are Edinburgh based HQ anyway). Clydesdale not very often -they pop out much more frequently over towards and in Glasgow city itself. I have had general UK (ok - English banknotes if you like!) emerge among the local notes - but not all that often.
Weekend here again! Enjoy!
Matt: I was only in Newcastle for two days and one night in 2000 (uni interview) and the Geordies I personally came into contact with did not fit your pretty dire description, no way, but maybe I went to the wrong club that night or something. You may of course have a point when I think on a wee bit - on a couple of occasions I did see several blokes stand facing walls in broad daylight in busy streets relieving themselves of excess Newcastle Brown or something. At least here in Edinburgh we wait until it gets dark.... :-) Not me of course......och no! Dreich.... Maybe those that do that Newcastle thing here are visiting Geordies.....they only have a hundred miles to cover to get up here. You can tell they're Geordies a mile off - by the accents loud and clear......hinny.
Wow I'd like to live in real castle. Is Geordie a girl or a boy?.
