Mesopotamia refers to the region now occupied by modern Iraq, and parts of eastern Syria, southeastern Turkey, and southwest Iran.

I think some people subscribe to a more restrictive definition of Mesopotamia, consisting only of the areas that lie between the Tigris and Euphrates. (To Guest: Mesopotamia is a Greek-derived word meaning "between the rivers".) In this case, southwest Iran would be excluded, along with much of Iraq.
