Why is "UFO" pronounced "yoo eff oh" rather than say "yoofo"? In some languages, it actually is pronounced as a word rather than as an abbreviation.

For the same reason we don't turn FBI into "fibby" or CIA into "seeah" -- because they are letters that stand for other words, not words unto themselves. True, some acronyms have become words unto themselves, like radar, but these have not.
