If you're referring to police investigation, sometimes they put a model in a bathtub (or other body of water), to see if it's really possible that the victim could have drowned in this bathtub.
In some cases, it's determined that the victim couldn't have accidently drowned, due to the layout of the bathtub, the size, etc. Rather, she would have had to have her head held underwater by a murderer.
