Perhaps long ago, Bahasa Indonesia and Tagalog were mutually comprehensible.

(I'm still annoyed that Berlitz has yet to make a guide for the latter.)

They should be ! Theoritically, they have one common "ancestor". :-)

I have sort of an off-topic question for Kabayan:

Is "kabayan" a word in Bahasa Indonesian (as opposed to a proper name)? If so, what does it mean?

In Tagalog, "kabayan" or "kababayan" means "countryman; compatriot" ... not to be confused with "kabayo" which means "horse". ;-D

Kabayan is a name of a Sundanese folklore character.

wena, it's nice to know that Tagalog has Kabayan in its vocabulary, what a coinsidence.
Sundanese has the word kababayan too, but it has a negative and gross meaning, so I better not to tell you.
kabayan ( kababayan ) means compatriot......interesting :)
