past or perfect?

From an ESL book:

Mavis: Yes, we went last week. I didn't think it was as good as people said though. He was better in Titanic. Still I've always wanted to see it, so... >>

Would "I always wanted to see it" be more appropriate there?

I think I would say "I had always wanted to see it." "I always wanted to see it." sounds a little weird to me in this situation.

Before I saw it, I always wanted to.
