<<Again, the last post by "Travis" was not by me...
Wieder war die letzte Post von "Travis nicht von mir...>> I figured. Your mom is surely higher-class than a garden instrument :) <<Canadian: Mum Dad>> My cousins from Canada call my aunt "mum"--I've always thought that was pretty cool.

I knew someone who called her grandmother "grandmommy." When she was talking about her, also called her "grandmommy," with no possessives preceding it, as if it were her grandmother's name. Ugh.

I always call my parents "Mom" and "Dad".

I call them "Mum" and "Dad" though there are contexts in which I'd use the words "mother" and "father" to refer to them (in a formal speech, for example).

<<As far as I remember we weren't taught to capitalize "mom" or "dad.">>
That's interesting. Because I was taught that ''Mam'' (Welsh English for ''Mom'') and ''Dad'' were supposed to be capitalized. I wonder if my teacher was just wrong. Do you think that's a probability, Kirk?

Well, I guess it's not impossible, but there are some varying standards in orthographical practices thruout the world. I would never capitalize "mother" or "father," even when referring to my own, so it only seems natural to me that "mom" and "dad" not get capitalized. The only case where I could see it being capitalized here is if someone is using it as a form of address or in place of a name: "Did you know that Dad wants to go too?" "Come on, Mom, let's hurry up!" but... "My dad wants to go too" "I told my mom to hurry up" Anyway, I would rarely ever need to use "mom" and "dad" in writing in the first couple examples, so that may reinforce it in my mind that those words don't get capitalized.

Disgusting what a sick forum. I should report this to MJD. This type of material should be kept in Europe - no where else.
