<< Spanish is now studied more than French in portugal and is increasing in Ireland, UK (where is going to overcome German in less than 5 years) in Italy (where is studied more that German in secondary education, (but at all levels wins German) Where will overtake German and French at 5 and 10 years respectively, and in the countries of the north and east.

In the report of the EU (Eurobarometer) in 2000 only 3% of European citizens spoke Spanish as second/foreign language but the report of 2005 is spoken by 9% in the europe of 27 (+6 in only 5 years !!!!!!!!!!). People, we have to wait until 2010 to see the next report of the EU (Eurobarometer) possibly where the percentage of Spanish speakers will be very close to the German and French as second languages, both languages are now 14% in europe. I see Spanish as the second most studied in the EU in less than 15 years >>

where did you get the info that Spanish is now more popular than French in Portugal? Around 24% of the the Portuguese speak French while Spanish is spoken by just 9%.

Spanish is spoken by a mere 6% while French by 23%.

Spanish will never overtak French and German in Europe because Europeans know that Spanish speaking countries have weak economy and influence its influence is weak too. Eastern Europe and Nordicv countries will not choose Spanish.

Actually Russian has 7% of non-native speakers in EU and Spanish and Italian have 6% and 3% respectively.

So Russian is more widely studied than the two and in 15 years Russian will become the 2nd most widely studied all over Europe. It will rise in Germany, FRance, UK, Spain, and Italy plus the Nordic countries.

no... Russian is done... it has no true economic power... no status or further appeal . It will shrink, more than you can ever imagine.

It's Spanish language that has no economic and military power and does not appeal to people. Russian is avery beautiful language and so pleasant to hear.

Imagine Russian has more non-native langauge than either Spanish or Italian in EU when none of the Russian speaking countries is a member. it only shows that Russian is ever growing unlike Spanish and Italian shrinking its share in EU.

Let's wait and see after 15 years and Russian will definitely overtake German and French and eventually English.

Sounds like the good-old "We will bury you" spirit is back in style in Russia.

This is true that there are more speakers of Russian than Spanish as a second language in the EU, but you have to bear in mind that all of them live in eastern europe and are generally very elderly. These people were forced to study and learn Russian because they were a Russian colony. If you realize, young people of eastern countries don't speak Russian, nothing, even they hate it. Nobody is studying Russian in France, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain or Holland. Even in the countries of eastern, English and German have passed into Russian. Within a few years, spanish will overtake to Russian in the east, i don't know if you know that the study of Russian and Spanish in countries such as Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia or hungary are very equal in terms of number of students (with Russian stagnated or falling and spanish growing dramatically)

<<where did you get the info that Spanish is now more popular than French in Portugal? Around 24% of the the Portuguese speak French while Spanish is spoken by just 9%.>>

Obviously this is a lie, first of all you have to be quiet because you don't live in the Iberian peninsula. Traditionally has been more studied French than Spanish in portugal but that change last year, now Spanish took the second place. And don't you think that because nobody before some years study Spanish, now no one spoke it. You have no idea about spain and portugal so is better don't write nothing. Portuguese people watch Spanish television, many, even millions have worked sometime in spain because spain is bigger than portugal and there is more work, thousands or even millions of Portuguese cross the border to buy gasoline in spain (in Spain gasoline is more cheaper than in portugal), half of the 10 million tourists who visit portugal are Spaniards. SO SHUT UP AND DON'T TALK ABOUT THINGS THAT YOU HAVE NO FUKING IDEA.

<<Spanish is spoken by a mere 6% while French by 23%.>>

True, I was wrong, i said the 9% but is 6%. But you have to look more far. In 2000 was 3% and only 15 European countries, arround 300 million people. In 2005 was 6%, THE TWICE IN ONLY 5 YEARS and with 27 European countries and more than 400 million people. These data show us that spanish is the faster growing language in the europe of 27.
Still far away from French and German but if the trend continues, in 15 years spanish will end to the hopes of the grandeur people.

IN THE NEXT EUROBAROMETER SPANISH WILL HAVE ARROUND 9-12% OF SCOND SPEAKERS AND WILL OVERTAKE RUSSIAN

In 2000 bad, in 2005 spanish overcome italian, in 2010 will overcome russian, 2015 near the German and french, 2020 will overcome german, 2025 will overcome french, 2030???? Who know, WE HAVE TO WAIT TO THE NEXT EUROBAROMETER.
