Is French on the decline

Spanish reality check   Wed Dec 17, 2008 10:54 am GMT
An important reaction to the model article of this post.

Actually the real reasons Spanish is a fragmenting is simply that it failed to put emphaisis on education. As result majority of the Hispanic Americans, Andalusians, and Canarians speak bad Spanish. They are so confused which language to turn on to Castilian/French/Italian. Exmples of rip offs by the hispanics from the French is the elimantion of consonants at the end of a word like "españole" instead of "españoles" and the elimination of vowels at the end of the word as in "Cochs" instead of "coches". These features are prevalent in most parts of Hispanic America. You see, if only education was implemented by this would not happened. If you listen to how the Hispanic Americans speak, you would notice a big difference even if you don't speak Spanish. Yes even the educated insist on speaking this bastardized form of Spanish which gave an impression to speakers of Chamorro, Chavacano, and Papiamento as a variant of theor speech. Many linguist experts predict that Spanish will split into several neo-hispanic languages within 50 years becasue of the lack of discipline on the way its speakers handle the language.

<< France first tried to grab its neighbours' countries, and got trounced. It later got north Africa (which it misruled dreadfully), the desert and semi-desert of the west African interior, Haiti, Syria, Lebanon, Québec, and a few pockets of India - mostly places where a major international language was already spoken or widely understood: Arabic. >>

Where the hell did you get the informantion that arabic is an international languages in Haiti, Québec, and a few pockets of India? Are you really that ignorant?

If that's the case then Hindi is the widely spoken and the internationl language of Spain and Hispanic America.

<< As for the lists of actors above, how many of them actually speak it fluently? Also, how often do they actually need to use it? Probably not often because they speak English. Just because these people know French (to various extents) that doesn't change the fact that French is less spoken and much less useful today. >>

Yes all of them speak French fluently or proficiently. The list does not include those who have a just smattering of the language.

Will you stop sourgraping and get envious just because you cannot find a reliable link that contains a list of Spanish speaking celebrities.

<< French is on decline in Canada, with Montreal being firmly bilingual. One can live in Montreal the whole life without having to learn a word of French. >>

Shut up because, you don't know what you're talking about. Most Anglos there have been gallicized. You can find people in Montreal with surnames Smith, Johnson, MacDonald, Brown etc. but monolingual in French.

Yes, it's a bilingual city but the bilinguals there are the Anglos unlike before that it was the other way around. The tide has turned.

FRENCH THE NEXT WORLD LANGUAGE

French language alive and kicking by/from Jeffery Simpson ChronicleHerald-Vive le francais- According to Jean-Benoit Nadeau and Julie Barlow, the language is alive and flourishing. “English Canadians — and actually all English speakers — are probably most surprised to hear that, far from declining, French is thriving,” Barlow said in a recent e-mail interview. “Today, there are 180 million French speakers in the world, more than there ever have been.” The couple has produced in The Story of French a journalistic work that explores how the language has held its own against English in terms of global influence. For instance, the number of French speakers has kept pace with global population growth, tripling during the past 50 years. IT'S THE WORLD'S SECOND INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE and the official tongue in 33 countries, compared with 45 for English. “Some linguists claim that half of English vocabulary comes from French — words as varied as strive, pedigree, war, catch, chase, pledge, challenge,” Barlow says. “At any rate, some of the prestige French enjoys in English-speaking culture definitely comes from this history. “The result is that today, to a certain extent, as English sweeps the planet, it’s carrying French with it.” “By our estimates, the more educated those countries get, the more francophone they will become,” she said.

At one point the French tried to make French the official language of the internet. French is a great language to learn and appartently not going away anytime soon.

It would be much more hilarious if the hispanics tired to make Spanish the official language of Internet when the hispanics contributions to mankind have nothing to do with economy, science, medicine, technolgy and arts but vanity, corruption, indolence and of course DRUG TRAFFICKING.

Of course it would be ridiculous also if Spanish speakers claimed such a thing, however they don't because they are sane. The fact that the French were actually deluded and conceited enough to do such a thing is mind blowing!

At least you admitted because the imagwe of the Spanish speaking world is tarnished and full of negative connations unlike the French speaking world that even non-french speaking countries in Asia admire its language and culture because of its lasting and usefl cointributions to mankind which the Spnish speaking world cold not duplicate.

Francophony - French speakers worldwide

Francophony - Broadly speaking, this covers all the actions to promot the French language and the values it conveys. In the institutional sense (with a capital "F") it relates to the International Organization of French-speaking Communities (the OIF), made up of 63 states and governments.
Who are the French speakers ?
More than 200 million people speak French worldwide.

French is one of the planet's leading languages of communication. Although it is spoken by fewer people than Chinese or Hindi, it is, alongside English, the only spoken on all continents.

Why speak French ?
In North America, French is an assertion of cultural identity.

In sub-Saharan Africa, speaking French opens the door to basic education. French is the language of development and modernity in this region.

In Central and Eastern Europe, knowledge of French is associated with a sense of belonging to a united Europe whose three capitals (Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg) are French-speaking cities and French is a working language, alongside English, in the European Union institutions.

“French is one of the two UN working languages, one of the two official languages of the International Olympic Committee, the only universal language for the postal services and the African Union's main language.”

Who teaches French ?
The OIF operators work closely with France and the 850,000 French-language teachers worldwide to estimate demand and extend teaching to reach new audiences.

French lycées (secondary schools) and approved educational establishments abroad make a major contribution to the spread of the French language. This unique network of over 440 establishments based in 135 countries counts over 250,000 French and non-French students.

TV5MONDE also provides support to French-language teachers with its Learning and Teaching with TV5MONDE course.

TV5MONDE - the international French-language channel
With over 176 million households receiving TV5MONDE on all five continents and 59 satellite links, TV5MONDE, the number two international TV channel, offers an around-the-clock range of viewpoints on the world

THE BRITISH HAS SPOKEN THAT:

French is today spoken by 65 to 130 million people around the world as a native language, and by about 190 to 600 million people as a second or third language, with significant number of speakers in 54 countries. Most native speakers of the language live in France, where the language originated. The rest live in Canada, Belgium and Switzerland. It is an official language in 29 countries, language of all United Nations agencies and a large number of international organizations.

Let's say that the number of native spekers including those in Africa is at 115 million and the secondary, third and non-native speakers is at 500 million that would be 615 million. Way ahead than all the other major languages in terms of total speakers(except for English, Mandarin and Hindustani) but way ahead of Mandarin and Hindi in secondary and non-native speakers.
