>>I took this to mean that the writer meant that for her to adopt an accent other than her general American accent would be taken as pretentious and affected. Obviously, if she did it well, no one other than people who already knew her would know it was not her native accent.<<
I somewhat misread the post, yes; you are right, it seems, in your reading of it.
>>She didn't mention which accent she would use if she could change the one she has anyway, so why pick on RP? You can sound affected and pretentious in any accent or dialect, and there is no better example of that than Bostonian (that's the Boston in America, not the Mk I version).<<
I was saying that if "pretentious" were associated with any particular dialect by the general public, it would probably be Received Pronunciation.
"i agree with this apart from black people never think there white what about the posh speaking blacks that sound just like a white bloke you chat shit"
Are'nt they called educated black people? It doesnt mean they are trying to be white,it means they were educated and speak a certain way.

Liking rap is one thing,I like some of the rap music, but you don't see me walking around with baggie jeans, sweat shirts, bandana's,jewelery trying to act hard, and ghetto like.I'm speaking about the white kids, who in most cases are'nt poor, but pretend they have it hard in life, why act poor if your obviously well off ?
Hey, I agree. I love rap...it's great. I even like the lyrics if I can understand them, even if they are homophobic or anti white. Rap music is legit type of music and appeals to lots of others who, like me, are white, deffo don't live in any kind of ghettoes, deffo don't to the bling thing, and are deffo not on any kind of poverty breadline and making one mega big streetwise political issue out of it all.
Im not such a fan of modern Rap, the bling bling, "gonna bust a cap in your arse", "goona slap my woman about" stuff is just anoying. I mean NWA etc. had a political edge to their stuff so i can handle that a bit more.
I prefere the cheesy Sugar Hill Gang stuff, Run DMC, Del Tha Funky Homosapian, and the French hip hop band Manau especialy. East coast stuff really. But that is only in passing, only own a couple of songs. Im what narrow minded chavs would call a Greebo, sigh.
I hate the american accent it is arrogant and insulting to my ears. Its like talking out of your arse.
My favourite local accent is North Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds. What you might call a 'farmer's accent', but I love it.
Voice recording from the North Gloucestershire area.....actually it's people from Cirencester (pronounced "SIREN-sester"), on the southern edge of the Cotswolds. When she was alive Princess Diana was often seen shopping there with the two wee lads at the time (now Wills and Harry) as Prince Charles' home (Highgrove - which he now shares with Camilla) is very close to Cirencester.
Cirencester developed from the very important Roman base which they founded and called Corinium. Places with "chester" or "cester" or "caster" in their names (eg Chester itself, Manchester, Cirencester, Leicester, Gloucester, Doncaster) means that they developed from Roman fortresses - "castris".
Visiting Roman sites and fortifications is really great, and the nearest to us here is the Antonine Wall which Emperor Atoninus Pius built from AD81 between what is now Glasgow in the west and Edinburgh in the east as the northernmost boundary of the Roman Empire, a toned down version of the more famous Hadrian's Wall in the North of England built by the Emperor Hadrianus Tribianus (Hadrian) to keep us lot in our place on this side of the fortification. Hasn't always worked then, since or even now :-)

The scouse accent is the best.
Modern rap is no better than most of the pop shite thats floating around these days,it has no substance, its the same crap over and over again. At least back in the late 80's early to mid 90's rappers used their influence to try and better things for their people.
black people do try to act white i know jamaicans that hate ther own people u sit there makin out yr a proud black man u blaitently fuck white bitches there is no such thing as ghetto in england being on benefits and living on an estate does not make u ghetto every1 is trying to talk jamaican and american mixed together its embarrasing u should love yr self for who u r and if black men didnt fuck stupid white bitches then non of this would have happened white girls trying to brave up to me with cornrows in there hair talking all squeeky and weird walking around with a black man on their arm like an accessory have kids all the colors of the rainbow i hate everybody in this stupid country fuck england u r all sheep get yr own identities i dont need to beg no1 im proud of my races and i speek english
Wow, I'm late for this string, but I have to say-
I LOVE Scottish and Irish accents, I also like the Texas drawl- the British is kind of cute, but I find it also can seem snobby.
I'm French - Canadian (Quebec) so I've got a pretty funny accent of my own.
Accents are awesome.
Accents I don't like: American- New Yorker accent ITS SO ugggh
And by the way,
We don't Say Aboot. I don't know who started that. lol
***I LOVE Scottish and Irish accents, I also like the Texas drawl- the British is kind of cute, but I find it also can seem snobby***
Generalising a wee bit, I reckon! :-) Accents vary a lot even in the same regions/localities, especially in this country where there are SO many as we've discussed time and time and time again in here.
Scottish and Irish accents are usually top of the faves listings it's true (yay!) but I doubt whether a Martian who takes wrong turning above Glasgow and crash lands in Sighthill Park would go a bundle much on the local accent. On the other hand s/he may think it's mega cool......there's no accounting for taste, terrestrial or non terrestrial. Many visitors to Glasgow would not be able to tell the difference between Glaswegian and Martian anyway. Bill Bryson was a case in point.
British "kind of cute"? Scouse and Brummie are British..... ;-)
>>I'm French - Canadian (Quebec) so I've got a pretty funny accent of my own.<<
I'd really like that one explained; I'm aware that many people in Quebec have French as a preferred language, but as the place is bi-lingual, one is obviously exposed to both languages from at least shortly after birth, so I'm at a loss to understand how a French-Canadian's accent in English could be different from that of any other Canadian, given a lifetime's experience in hearing and speaking both languages.
Who could have a better chance to speak two languages perfectly than a French-Canadian?
Is a deliberate attempt made to speak English differently?
