English is the hardest language to learn

Englishnative   Tue Jun 19, 2007 4:11 pm GMT
Hi, yes English is my first language. I can speak other languages aswell, such as Russian, French, Spanish, (and a bit of german). I personally think a person will find a language hard if their native tongue isn't from the same language family or maybe, they do not speak another foreign language that is related to the language they want to learn. So for an english person like me, I find german easy along with french due to the large borrowings from anglosaxon, viking and norman influences. Also because my knowledge of french- a latin based language, I can then easily pick up spanish due to the large similarities.

Oh, by the way most of your english has been great and completely understandable.

Ciao!

The funniest thing I'm seeing here is that the posters who say "English is easy to learn" are all making terrible grammar mistakes--except for Calliope; however, even he made a mistake or two.

The Chinese posters were the worst. (lol!) The one who talked about living in Shanghai had such bad grammar that I couldn't understand his sentences.

I don't know how hard English is to learn for non-natives, but I can attest to the fact that the spelling rules suck.

Even natives struggle with English spelling; some never master it.

For what it's worth, for English-speaking people, the hardest language on the Earth to learn is not an Asian language, as several posters have suggested, but NAVAJO.

That was me.

Even I made some punctuation errors. ;-)

I'm Polish but in my viewpoint English is really easy to learn. Probably degree of difficulty is addicted to nationality. But in my case theres no barriers and my vocabulary and pronunciation are really good - I think so ;) What else... I try to use it everyday and I now I have to break boards to achieve something. Thus practice is the most important thing.

Its really easy to tell the non-native speakers on this board. I agree with 'guest,' everyone who's said "English is a very easy language to learn" has made mistakes, even Michael, who's English is better than most.

"What else... I try to use it everyday and I now I have to break boards to achieve something." What the hell does that mean? lol

Michael, with all due respect, your English is full of grammar mistakes.

Ça ne change rien au fait que l'anglais est facile d'accès.

English the hardest language? Don't make me laugh.

English isn't my first language and I can tell you from my experience that English is NOT the hardest language to learn, by any means. I don't find the grammar complicated, neither is it all that irregular. I have been taking both German and French classes since my first year in high school and I can say that French is more complicated than English. The only hard thing about English is the irregular spelling. But let's talk about grammar.
The English language has like every other language irregular verbs. But they aren't all that irregular. It's very easy to memorize them.
French is terrible language. Even regular verbs change when you conjugate them. (mange, mangeons, not mangons). English has NO cases and no genders. Really, I don't even speak German or in French, just because othe genders and cases are troubling me. There are rules, however, there are also exceptions. A language without cases and genders is easier.
The pronunciation is also easy, but that's just a matter of opinion. French has some hard sounds.

That's all I have to say for now.

Oops, some errors in my post. Unfortunately, I can't change anything.

I'm surprised by Bruno's post. I thought that English wasn't hard for Germans. German and English have a lot in common.

THX, I don't know whether or not English is the hardest language to learn, but I do know that writing fluently seems extremely difficult for foreigners; I haven't met anyone so far who can do it.

If you really are NOT a native speaker, then, I have to hand it to you; you're the first one--certainly in this particular thread--who has mastered it. :-)

What a lame statement by you Jasper. Contents on this particular website are written by two non- native speakers and on top of that, they had not lived in any English speaking country for too long.

Open your eyes and brain.
