French vs German vs Spanish? Difficulty & Usefulness?
Politics again.
Can you do anything on what's happening around the world? Maybe you can ask the more than a dozen Hispanic counties to do something.
French is the first language only in 2 countries: France and Monaco.
In Belgium the first language is Dutch. In Switzerland is German and in Canada is English. It is spoken only by 85 million people as mother tongue. New Caledonia and Tahiti are DOM-TOM of France.
The strengh of English and Spanish is obvious. From the ECONOMIC point of view too.
For instance, the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of Latinos in USA, Mexico and Spain togheter is stronger than the GDP of Germany or France.
Arabic, Chinese, English and Spanish are the languages of the future. The world is changing very fast...and German and French are not in the top ten languages as mother tongue.
Spanish has a mediocre place in: Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania.
At finally, Spanish is not at all one international language as English, French but also Arabic...

That cannot be accepted French is an official and the mother tongue in Canada, Switzerland, and Belgium.
Obviously you know nothing about this and you're a francophobe. Read and do some research.
Arabe no tiene nada de importancia. A todo el mundo le da asco este idoma feo. Por lo menos la escritura es bastante guay, pero ...

That cannot be accepted. French is an official Canada with English, Switzerland with German, Italian, and Romansch, and Belgium with Dutch.
The mother tongue of 30% of the people in Canada(Quebec, New Brunswick, and Northern Ontario + parts of Prairie and Maritime Provinces) , 20% in Switzerland(Romandie), and 45% in Belgium(Wallonia).
How can it be the mother toungue of 85 million people just France and Monaco alone since the population of the former is 60 million whilet the latter is just 20,000. Can't you be a little more logical?

Spanish speakers should stop bragging and imposing language.
Russian is a big contender as international languages too. It is natively spoken in Russia and Belarus. Ukraine have 30% of its population are native Russian speakers and Kazakhstan have 10 million all the rest are bilingual and Russian is the language of commerce, government, and administration.
In addtion Russian is the widely spoken in former Soviet Republics and it is their international language too and so as in Mongolia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, and most of Eastern Europe especially the Slavic people. It is again being studied in China. In Turkey it is fast becoming the most common foreign language.
Let me negate what others are saying that Spanish is fast becoming popular all over the world. How can that be since the most popular Western European languages in Russia, Ex-Soviet Republics and Eastern Europe are English, French, German, and Italian in that order while Spanish is like a merchandise that has been displayed for a long time in a store because nobody wants to buy it.
Except for the fact, of course, that over 1 million ex-USSR citizens now live in Spain without counting the other 1 million from other neighbouring countries now living in Spain and who were forced to learn Russian (which they are forgetting quite fast.)
The fact is Russian isn't taught any longer where it used to be and it has become very much a regional continental language. Not even the Cubans learn Russian any longer.
Russian is declining, Spanish is growing rapidly - that is the difference.
Russia is the biggest country of the planet.
Land area has nothing to do with language or population. Russia's population is falling by hundreds of thousands a year.
But admit it that Spanish will never be accepted in Europe especially in Eastern Europe. So how can it grow rapidly. It's confined only to Latin America and Spain. Oh yes, the birthrate is high and so is poverty.
While Russia it's spoken natively by large number of people and also as second language in in Ex-Soviet Republics. Mongolia, Turkey, and most of Eastern Europe especially by other speakers of Slavic languages as compared to Spanish that it is only widely spoken in the US due to the presence of Hispanic immigrants there the only country outside Latin America and Spain.
Don't believe everything that you read on the statistics. How can Russia's population falling? Due to immigration but birthrate is still on increase.
<<The fact is Russian isn't taught any longer where it used to be and it has become very much a regional continental language. Not even the Cubans learn Russian any longer.>>
Look who's talking. What do you think of Spanish? It's the real regional continental languge.
Why don't you have a chat with Eastern European to find out if they know Spanish. Definitely not. Italian is more widely known there. Just admit that fact.
I read a message above. It looks like that Spanish speakers are not only insecure to French, German, Russian but to Arabic language too. Arabic has almost the same status as Spanish. It is spoken natively in wide continuous geographical area from Mauritius to Iraq and from Syria to Sudan.
Spanish speakers are so obsessed with the idea that many people of France speak Spanish. Yes they do because it's one of the options in curricula along with English, German, and Italian. But I doubt if they take it seriously and eventually become proficient in it.
Actually the French prefer Italian than Spanish because they have been influenced so much by the Italians such as in arts, music, cuisine, and architecture unlike Spaniards who copied almost everything from France and Italy. Even to these days, the French still admire the Italian language and they speak it readily if the sitaution dictates.
French is required in secondary curriculum in Spain, UK, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Ireland while Spanish is not. In Scandinavia it's optional meaning they may choose either German or French since English is required.
French is also required in secondary schools in Brazil, Hispanic America(except Mexico because as we all know.....), USA, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Well, Vlad and Guest. I read in a lot of pages that (Encarta, Britannica, Google, Etc)
-French, first language or mother tongue of 77 million people (Encarta 2006). France 60 m, Belgium 3 m, Canada 7 m, Switzerland 1,3 m and others 6 m. So, only in France and Monaco French IS THE FIRST LANGUAGE O MOTHER TONGUE. ONLY IN TWO COUNTRIES.
-Russian, first language of 2 countries, 167 million people as mother tongue (Russia and Belarus). Encarta 2006
-Spanish, first language of 25 countries, 322 million people as mother tongue (Encarta 2006) 350 million (Google)
In Eastern Europe (Poland, Rumania, Hungary, etc) Spanish is studied by a lot of people. (Instituto Cervantes repport). It is right that it was a language unknown in this area, but at this moment there are a lot of students.

But Frenc is the official language of 30 countries, and a lingua franca, or administrative language in 50 countries... You forgot quite a lot of details and precisions...
