I am going to study abroad in dublin next year. I am from upstate ny, how do folks there feel about american accents?
What accent do you really hate? and which one you love?
Be sure that Yorkshire doesn't like Lancashire, ie. People like Adam
so we would never agree to an English parlament, It would be exactly like the one we've got at the moment, all the way down in London, that goes for a northern assembly aswell, we saw this was a bad idea when the North East voted on it. But a solution needs to be found, the current system doesn't work fairly, we were supposed to vote on a Yorkshire Assembly this year, that would be brill!, but the North East vote scared the government off the idea.
Oh and Adam the reason Plyd Cymru and the SNP are more acceptable is because they don't have the racist, facist, nazi ideals of the BNP or other similar "England for the English" groups. There is no need at all for groups like this here, at all.
Like Damian says, you don't need to go join some nationalist group to say that you want a fair system, and to express your pride in your culture or what ever. If Yorkshire got an assembly you would find either a Labour or Lib Dem party incharge, not some Yorkshire type party.

Jump right in there, pal, and go for it. Dublin is a great and beautiful city, to look at and to feel it's atmosphere. I know it was a special occasion when I was there (for the first time ever) over the Easter weekend just gone, and they were commemorating the 1916 Easter Rising, a very significant moment in the Irish fight for freedom from British control, which eventually let to Ireland becoming a totally free and independent nation. Today Ireland has benefitted from EU membership, and has been a net recipient of EU funding and support, resulting in Ireland becoming the highly prosperous and confident nation it is today. It has adopted the Euro currency as well, unlike the UK.
Ireland has always been very closely linked to the United States, and many Irish people have American relatives as a result of the mass migration to the US during the very lean days of famine and poverty. Even the accents of Ireland and parts of the USA are very closely connected, so your American accent will not be looked upon negatively in any way at all I wouldn't think. In fact, you will hear many similarities, especially as you say you come from upstate New York. Go for it. Stop procrastinating......he who hesitates is lost. ;-)

Keep your wits about you as well, they like to tell tall tales to gullible Americans. My sisters boyfriend told one lass that every one in Ireland had a Leprachaun that the government gave them at the bottom of their garden that they had to feed, she believed him!! He also told his American relatives, that a certain tree was planted by their familys before they left for America, they all got really emotional apparently and went to take cuttings etc, he was laughing behind his hand...very naughty.

Ha,Ha they failed and were shot and Ireland isn't totally free. We still control a fifth of the country. There is nothing the terrorist paddy can do.

"It would be exactly like the one we've got at the moment,"
How would it be exactly the same as the one we have got now? Us English haven't even got a Parliament and, when we do, there will no no Scots, Welsh or Irishmen in it.

How is BNP an English group, consiering that it's called the BRITISH National Party, and led by Nick Griffin, a WELSHMAN?

England now, thankfully, has its own equivalent of the SNP and Plaid Cymru - the EDP (English Democrat Party). Theie chairman is Robin Tilbrook.
Here's what it says on its website -
http://www.englishdemocrats.org.uk/
The English Democrats party was formed in 2002 because the New labour Government in its rush to secure national devolution for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, completely ignored the interests and indeed the existence of England. Our primary objective is the creation of an English Parliament and Executive within the United Kingdom with the same powers as the Scottish Parliament and Executive.
We believe that the people of the England need a political party which will represent their interests and the interests of England as a nation in its own right. We are proud to call ourselves English patriots but we are not racists or extremists. Membership of the English Democrats Party is open to anyone, whatever their ethnicity or culture. All we require is that members are broadly in agreement with our manifesto and abide by the rules of our constitution.
We are committed to the creation of a Parliament for England but we are not a single issue party. We are committed to government of the people of England, by the people of England and for the people of England. We believe it is important to preserve the traditional freedoms of the people of England such as Habeas Corpus and trial by Jury. We believe in a system of government that gives as much power and freedom as possible to the people and communities of England
As a political party we recognise that real Democracy is much more than the ability to choose, from time to time, between broadly similar parties which compete amongst themselves for power. Real democracy is measured by the ability of the people to manage their political, economic, physical, and cultural environment. We believe in real LOCAL Government not artificial Regional Bureaucracies. We believe that any change in the Constitution or Government of England should only be made by the people of England in a Referendum
We believe that the people of England have the right to decide whether they wish to remain part of the European Union. If the people of England wish to remain part of the European Union then they are entitled to have their views and interests represented in the EU in the same way that the interests of Scotland and Wales are represented by their Devolved executives.
English Democrats come from widely varying backgrounds and from all parts of England. We are a new, vigorous and growing group of individuals frustrated by the failures and arrogance of the professional politicians of the existing parties. Join us and play a part in building a party that represents your views, your interests and your country.
(English Democrat Chairman Robin Tilbrook)

"Britishness" OR "Englishness"?
The English Democrats, as English Patriots, rephrase Gordon Brown's call for the celebration of patriotism.
We realise that Gordon Brown's purpose is to promote himself and his career but the English Democrats would reassure him that we don't constitutionally object to him becoming the Prime Minister of the U.K. - provided that there is a fair Devolutionary settlement for the English Nation - first!
The English Democrats rephrase Gordon Brown's flag flying call as a call for every English Patriot to put up a flag pole and to fly our flag - the Saint George's Cross!
(Everyone is entitled to do this, under the Town and Country Planning (Control of Advertisements) Regulations 1992, under which a national flag, flown on a single vertical flagpole, is excluded from any planning control).

Terrorist paddy's?I suppose in 1920 when the British police auxiliaries entered croke park and started shooting at crowds of people killing 13 spectators and one player as retaliation for the deaths of 12/13 British Intelligence officers was just something I dreamt of ?
Oh wait ..........................

Ignore him and Adam who seem to have very very very similar views? A thought is forming in my head. By the way don't discuss history Irish or otherwise with Adam or point out any historical facts on this page because more than likely it will come back to haunt you.
Can't agree that such an accent is welcomed quite so freely in Ireland as has been said above, and there is really very little similarity in the accents.

What if you speak very fast?
What if you speak very fast?
As it is St George's Day on Sunday.........
Let's Have Home Rule For The English.
Fergus Shanahan, Deputy Editor of The Sun and a proud Englishman.
England needs to get its independence from Scotland.
There's a great line in Braveheart where the slippery King Edward says: "The trouble with Scotland is that it's full of Scots."
I have nothing personal against Scots. Some of my best friends are Scots.
But I am fed up with the way Scotland is allowed to run England. And as St George's Day approaches this Sunday, and England rallies proudly around its flag for the World Cup, this is the moment for the English to ask ourselves what we want to do about it.
Scotland is a great country. It has always punched above its weight.
William Wallace. James Watt. Rabbie Burns. Robbie Coltrane. The Bay City Rollers.
But what can you say about a nation that has Donald Where's Yer Troosers as its national anthem?
Scotland wants to go its own way. So does Wales.
The Scots have their Parliament. The Welsh have their Assembly. Even the Northern Irish are allowed self-government if they can stop squabbling long enough.
So why not the English?
It's the English who pick up most of Scotland's bills: £10 billion a year of English taxes go in Scot pockets.
On average, £1,300 more per person is spent on education, health, and social services in Scotland, Wales and Ulster than in England.
The Scottish Parliament refuses to charge students tuition fees. Yet Scots Labour MPs helped Blair win the Commons top-up fees battle when English MPs were against it.
English MPs voted against foundation hospitals but Blair won with the backing of Scots MPs, even though the Scots Labour party and Scots Parliament OPPOSED them.
It is not the political issues so much as the principle. Why should Scottish MPs UNELECTED by English people be able to run England when English MPs cannot run Scotland?
And as Blair's authority ebbs away he will become ever more dependent on Scottish support to pass laws affecting England.
The unfairness is overwhelming.
All Scottish MPs at Westminster can vote on every issue that affects England. But Westminster has hardly any say over Scotland. Scottish MPs can be ministers in London, handing out orders to the English which have no effect on their own constituents. And the Labour Government is stuffed with Scots, from Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling to John Reid and their stooge "Gorbals" Mick Martin, Speaker of the Commons.
Gordon Broon subjects English pensioners to means-testing yet his Dunfermline constituents escape it.
Unlike English OAPs, elderly Scots are not forced to sell their family homes to pay for care.
Since the Scots voted for devolution in 1997 they have taken over running nearly all their affairs. But they are quite happy for England to continue to pick up the bills. I say it's time for Scotland to go the whole hog. Let's treble the height of Hadrian's Wall to form a proper border, and let Scotland and England be independent nations. The Scots can raise their own taxes to pay their way in the world.
There's still a bit of oil left in the North Sea to keep them going. And when that runs out, they can flog some more kilts to the Americans or use their empty oil tankers to ship some water down to the parched farms of Kent and Essex (unlike Scotland, the South of England can get pretty hot and dry at times.)
As for the Welsh, let them have a crack at self-government too. If they run short of fuel, all they have to do is sit Neil Kinnock in front of a wind turbine and he'll generate enough electricity to light the valleys for a thousand years.
Why shouldn't England be allowed to get excited about itself as an independent nation?
When the Scots and the Welsh and the Northern Irish fly their flag, it is seen as good old-fashioned love of country.
But raise the English flag of St George in your garden and there is an uneasy sense that people may think you are some rabid nutter.
Nationalism, which means quite simply the love of your own nation, has been allowed to become a tainted word.
Come the World Cup the English flag will be flying high.
Let's keep it that way when the footie's over.
It's time England had a new Parliament - for the English.
