<Why should I try to make an effort to understand something I don't understand?>

Don't. If you don't understand don't understand. No effort. Just stay like your are. Be a person that does'not understand. It is understandable. By the way, no effort on my part to understand. Why should I try to undersand that you don't want to understand.

If I made an effort to understand you I would be infringing your right to be an non-understanding person. People who don't want to make an effort to understand should be left alone with their misunderstandings.

Can a Flemish person understand Germans speaking?
Yes, and no, if s/he pays attention it might.

I'm a Brazilian living in Portugal. I spoke in my language from the first day I arrived in Portugal and everybody understood me. It took me a few days to adapt to the local pronunciation and I still sound very Brazilian.

The Portuguese have always received me warmly. I am, of course, an educated Brazilian and I already knew both the Brazilian and Portuguese literary traditions when I first arrived here. I work in trade and I am accepted by everybody in Lisbon. We joke about each other, from time to time. The same happens with the Brits and the Americans I know.

I feel that people wanting to have separate Portuguese and Brazilian languages have got a political agenda and should worry more about bigger problems in Brazil.

If it is true that you might find some slight difficulties when first travelling to Portugal. The same could be said, not only between Brazilian regions but within the same city where you live. Not everybody in Rio speaks the same way!

The difficulties are easily overcome and also happen within English-language varieties.

I feel both Portugal and Brazil share a rich common heritage. Portugal is the Brazilian door to Europe and Brazil is the Portuguese door to the Americas.

Differences between the Germans and the Dutch are much greater since they also have also had different literary traditions for centuries.

Not a single Brazilian university will say the Portuguese and the Brazilians have got different languages.

The problem of Brazil is not linguistic pride. We have much greater social and educational problems to be solved. I'm sure the Portuguese language, in a cultivated Brazilian form if you will, will be a sign of other improvements.

I am Brazilian living in Spain and everybody understands when I speak Brazilian Portuguese. I'm from Rio Grande do Sul and our accent is easily understood by Spanish. I understand Spanish as well. No need to speak it since everybody understands it :)

I understand that some brazilians would like to have a national language that would not remind them of their portuguese colonial heritage. However it is not possible to make such an arrangement. The language of Brazil is portuguese. There is no way around it. Somethings are just the way they are. It is like your DNA. You get what you get.

Olha, vou ser sincero, muitos brasileiros que nunca tiveram contato algum com portugal ainda têm dificuldades em entender o falar fechado português, não dá pra(não se pode) ignorar isso, é a realidade.

A mídia não tem muito interesse em mostrar Portugal . Já em relação aos americanos, os laços são muito mais fortes por um simples motivo. Muitos acham chique a cultura americana, a língua, as tradições, a música, enfim, o famoso american way of life, preferem mostrar a cultura americana a portuguesa. Caiam na real.
