''I just finished saying that almost all of Brazilian presidents were of Portuguese descent and had Portuguese surnames.''

Yeah, you're right. Juscelino Kubitschek was the most important president od Brazil, and Kubitschek is very very Portuguese.

Que lei menciona o corte de línguas?

««a Língua Geral, uma língua indígena feita a partir da mistura de várias línguas do Brasil.»»

And who invented Lingua Geral?
Lingua Geral was a language invented by the Portuguese. It was not a "real" native language, it was a made up one. It was invented so that everybody could be understood with only one language. But one still needed to learn two languages, Portuguese and Lingua Geral. That is why Lingua Geral was forbidden.

The native indians always spoke their native languages many still do it today, what was forbidden was Lingua Geral.

Well you are right, Juscelino Kubitschek is not Portuguese but what you think about these:

Deodoro da Fonseca
Floriano Peixoto
Prudente de Moraes
Campos Salles
RodriguesAlves
Affonso Penna
Nilo Peçanha
Hermes Fonseca
Wenceslau Braz
Rodrigues Alves

Delfim Moreira
Epitácio Pessoa
Arthur Bernardes
Washington Luís
Júlio Prestes
Menna Barreto
Isaías de Noronha
Augusto Fragoso
Getúlio Vargas
José Linhares
Gaspar Dutra
Café Filho
Carlos Luz
Nereu de O. Ramos
Jânio Quadros
Castello Branco
Costa e Silva
Aurélio Lyra Tavares
Márcio Melo
João B. Figueiredo
José Sarney
Tancredo Neves
Itamar Franco
Fernando Collor de Mello
Fernando H. Cardoso

The full name of President Kubitschek was Juscelino Kubitschek DE OLIVEIRA.

His father was João César de Oliveira (very "foreign" sounding...) and his mother was Júlia Kubitschek, of Czech descent.

I suppose that early in his political career he found Juscelino de Oliveira too average (and I stress too AVERAGE) and he picked the ear-catching Kubitschek.
Just for the record...

Thank you for that Gringo....I was actually going to post those names myself, but decided instead to let the nay-sayers check for themselves. But the point has been proven to the disbelievers, even if they continue to be ignorant. I'm glad you posted the names. This way the information is crystal clear for all to read.

It is all in the net, very easy for anyone that knows two words of Portuguese.Don't bother with the naynay ignorance they will be ignorant no matter what. Ignorance is always catchy and contagious.

(A tiraria foi tamanha que as pessoas que insistiam em falar a língua geral, tinham a sua língua cortada! )

What is this nonsense about Marquês de Pombal?
I never heard of tongs cut. I would like to know what law was that where he ordered this.

As far a tyranny is concerned, Marquês de Pombal ABOLISHED SLAVERY; I think he has to be remembered for this "horrible tyranny".

He also took all the power away from the Inquisition; also for this "horrible tyranny" he can not be forgotten.

It is not only the root and foundation of Brazilian that is very Portuguese, allmost all Brazilian rulers are Portuguese descent. Portuguese presence s every where: in folklore, music, food, architecture, etc

''It is not only the root and foundation of Brazilian that is very Portuguese, allmost all Brazilian rulers are Portuguese descent. Portuguese presence s every where: in folklore, music, food, architecture, etc ''

folklore: macumba, samba....yes, this is very Portuguese
music: axé, lambada, samba, indeed, very Portuguese
food: pizza, churasco, aipim...indeed, very Portuguese
architecture: Brasília, yes very Portuguese

Brazil is a melting pot, just like the USA.
No nation was predominant.
Portugal is just a boring lesson in our history class.

Sorry for the offtopic-post. I've got a t-shirt with a text that may be Galacian. First I thought it were Spanish, and then Portuguese and now Galacian. So if someone could translate it, it would be great.
It's written in a bubble like this:

Carallo:
coma
o arre moito l
evar un bo róncalle
o manda non lle sae do
que töcalle o vitenove
non valer un saírlle do polo
acabar coma o importalle un
pasar polo lavela vaia que o b

cajho no ir ao.
---------------------------------------------------------------
It may be like this without all the lines:

Carallo:

Just in case if u dont know, Architechture, and food are very influenced by portuguese, and if u dont know the Carnival was brought to Brazil by portugueses

In addition to the many other Portuguese influences already mentioned i.e., food, architecture, let's not forget that the Portuguese also gave Brazil its beautiful Romance language, and the Roman Catholic religion.
